Unholy Contentions

Deemed to be the worst attack in UP in recent memory, the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots is more than just a communal lynching of one another. The Hindu/Muslim communities of Shamli and Muzaffarnagar clash over reports of eve-teasing. A Hindu Jat girl becomes the catalyst of a riot much repressed over the decade.

Unwittingly molested by Muslim villagers, the event spirals out of control when the concerned parties take offense and decide to take matters into their own hands.

Strangely enough, the police officials evade the capture of the original perpetrators in the hands of political bigwigs who serve their own interests instead of bringing justice to the innocent. The result was an ugly massacre spewed by the hate of some, to which the entire district had to pay the price for. Thousands lost their homes and loved ones. Now camped in various refugee shelters, these innocent and injured bystanders await resources in the hope that they will be able to find a footing in their lives once again. These pictures not only display the ugliness of the riots, the suffering of the innocent, but also how poorly the situation is being dealt with. While non-profit organisations and NGOs step forward to provide aid, it is nowhere near enough to cover the many displaced and persecuted.
