Cyanotype Workshop

About the workshop: The English polymath Sir John Henry Herschel invented the cyanotype process in 1841. The process produces striking prussian blue images which can be toned in various colours. Despite its simplicity and low cost, it has never been as widely used in photography as processes with a broader tonal range such as the albumen print. However, it remained in use well into the twentieth century as a means of reproduction: architectural blueprints, for example, were made with cyanotype chemistry. More recently, the cyanotype has been rediscovered by contemporary artists and explored in relation to its historical context as well as the expressive possibilities it offers. The process involves creating of images by contact printing with large size negatives (here negatives and images are of same size) in UV exposure table or in sunlight.

FOTO Company, a Shantiniketan based photography community is the pioneer of alternative photography movement in the eastern part of India. It firmly believes in the importance of craftsmanship in photography, an aspect largely ignored in the digital era. It aims to combine creative ideas with the traditional concepts and techniques of image making to explore the entire process of photography.
