A Dream Deferred

Diaz Lewis

Curated by Zeenat Nagree

In August 2012, Cuban artist Alejandro Figueredo Diaz-Perera and American artist and curator Cara Megan Lewis began collaborating between the two countries. An SMS would travel from the USA to Havana; in response, a missed call would be made in the opposite direction. Photos were taken over a year on both sides but they did not cross the sea. Assembled later in the form a book in Chicago, the project is a photographic documentation of a year through the eyes of two people separated by space, time zones, as well as the silence between geographic and political boundaries. The artist’s solo presentation, A Dream Deferred, at the Mumbai Art Room takes this book as its starting point to underscore the necessity of the freedom to speak and listen in order to remember.
