TALK: “You Like Mr. Shekhar”

TIME: 3pm

“You Like Mr. Shekhar” is a narrative from Hampi. Hampi is a village in the state of Karnataka, India. From the 14th to the 16th century it was the capital city of the Vijayanagara Empire (the largest Hindu Empire.) Vijayanagara fell to the rulers of northern India in the 16th century and subsequently lapsed into abandonment.
An area of Hampi was reoccupied 80-100 years ago, initially by banana farmers, joined by agrarian migrants over time. A government area was set up for people to live in the 1980s, but as the village grew, the 16th century ruins (protected monument area) were encroached upon. Hampi was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986 and enlisted as World Heritage in Danger in 1999, because of this encroachment. In April 2012, 327 families were relocated from this site by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), in order to conserve the architecture.
Some images from this project were exhibited at “A Photograph Is Not An Opinion”, Focus Festival 2012. Vidisha Saini will be sharing the extension of this project into performance and record objects.

PERFORMANCE: “We’re making waves for dolphins”

TIME: 3.30pm

A dolphin was spotted stuck in the putrid waterways of Brooklyn in January 2013. The images of this dolphin struggling for its life were circulated through out the day. By the evenig it had died.

“we’re making waves for dolphins” is a multi-media performance. The video is a text from a tour on Chambal river (fresh water river) which was home to many Dacoits, as well as the most endangered species of dolphins. A part of the river is being developed as a tourist attraction. Many tourists activities to “spot the dolphins” disturb their natural habitat.
Tourism is a culture of violence towards what is being sold, the person who is looking and the one hawking.
