Ben Kyneswood is a lecturer in Sociology at Coventry University and Photo Miner. His work explores how exhibitions of photography of people and place can generate community narratives that challenge dominant stereotypes by opening a doorway into intimate lives and spaces. Photo Miners most recent exhibition Masterji (currently on view at Akara Art as part of FOCUS, will be seen in the UK, India and America in 2017.

UK-based photographer and curator Jason Tilley presents a talk on photographs taken by his Anglo-Indian grandfather, a Times of India photographer, Bert Scott in the 1930s and 1940s. While exploring this archive, Jason discovered secrets and love stories from his grandfather’s past.
Jason is also the co-curator of the Masterji exhibition.

Blast furnaces, winding towers, processing plants – in many places the dilapidated remains of industrial development – live on in the photographs of Bernd and Hilla Becher. Transnational Nuclear Photography since 3.11

This talk will offer a contemporary view of nuclear landscapes in contemporary photography from Canada, Australia, and India, and discuss what it means to create socially and politically-engaged images of landscapes in the wake of the 2011 nuclear meltdown in Fukushima, Japan.
